Recently, I assisted in the Coaches Training Institute Synergy class. It was exciting to be with the students as they completed their core curriculum. We spent some time telling our stories of becoming and being coaches from the perspective of about 10 years in the future.
One woman said the title of her story would be something like Zombie Awakens. Zombie, what a timely word for the end of October. I certainly could identify with this story. Her becoming a zombie occurred working full time in a corporation with one child, while my becoming a zombie occurred while working part-time in healthcare with three children. The constant busy-ness, meeting the demands of others and conforming to all the rules overwhelmed me, and I faded into a zombie state. I felt as if I had to shrink and was becoming a mindless human doing.
My story did not end there. One of the important lessons I’ve learned is that, I need to bring more of my uniqueness and special qualities to my world. While I thought I had to stuff my individuality away, it turns out that when I share unique perspectives and actions, I contribute more.
Working in healthcare can be very rewarding and very draining. The fast pace of patient contact and the demands to document everything noticed and communicated can interfere with satisfying patient interactions. There are things you can do to increase your satisfaction.
What do you want to add into your story so that you can feel revitalized at work and at home?
