Do you ever get bored with patient care? One patient after another coming in, each unique and also sharing many commonalities. It’s easy to feel like you’re in a bit of a rut with repetition day in and day out. Repetition with your conscious effort leads to mastery, and sometimes to boredom. It can be exhausting. When cure is elusive and improvement may be slow at best, your sense of effectiveness may plummet too, leading to low self-value. Signs of physician burnout.
Recently, I read something about a physician who became a fiction writer and I was reminded of the importance of intellectual stimulation and creativity for doctors and nurses. To become a physician or nurse you need intellectual curiosity. Many physicians have enjoyed some creativity in music, the arts or even research. Being in practice seeing patients one after the other does not call upon these talents and skills. It is sad, and probably a bit frustrating, that an important part of you has been cut off.
There is something exciting about being involved with a creative endeavor, whether it be writing, developing an organization, making music or art, or building something. Being creative can be scary, especially if you attach judgment to the outcome, and it is also life enhancing.
- What do you do for intellectual stimulation?
- What kind of creative endeavors do you or would you enjoy?
- What might be the benefits for you personally if you were to engage in one of these, even for an hour a week?
