How is your day going? Sometimes by mid-morning chiropractors, MDs and other health care professionals are dragging. A variety of demands for your attention, phone calls from patients and insurance companies, tracking down lab results, dealing with staff and patients who are complaining. After all, do you set up the documentation around the “chief complaint?”
So how do you re-energize?
It turns out that most people are only attentive for 90 minutes to 2 hours at a time.
- Build a change of activity into your schedule in the morning and afternoon. This won’t take away from productive, income producing, time since you’ll be more efficient when you go back to the main focus of your day.
- Be Active – Physical Energy increases with movement and exercise. Perhaps you can take a brief walk in the stairwell or outside, or stretch in your office or staff room. Then return calls for a set amount of time rather than see another patient right away. Do some deep slow diaphragmatic breathing along the way and you’ll add some calm to your day.
Let’s face it, sometimes patient care in this demanding environment is exhausting and you feel depleted by the end of the day or week. Are you on your way to burn out? In order for you to provide the quality of care you take pride in and enjoy your life beyond work, you need to replenish.
- Set time aside 2x a week to engage in an activity that replenishes you. These restorative niches vary for each person. For some it is going for a walk, being alone with nature, or reading, while others prefer joining with friends. What helps you recover from the stresses in your life?
- Notice what aspects of your life recharge your battery and put a smile on your face or a sense of calm within when you think about them. These are activities you can benefit from doing more often.
