We’re in the 3rd week of 2018 now, how are you doing on achieving your goals and resolutions? This is a revealing week as far as our own “stick to it-iveness.” Now that you’re back in a routine, you may be feeling too tired to muster the energy to work on the goal or perhaps wondering if it is worth it. What helps you help you achieve your goals and get through the slump?
Recall the reasons and benefits of achieving your goal. Perhaps, when you achieve it, you’ll be more confident, more knowledgeable, get along better with others … and generally be happier. The importance and value your goal/resolution has, can continue to motivate you. Even with the development of good habits you may face a slump in your commitment.
Here are some ideas of what has worked for me and others when facing the challenge of moving forward when discouraged and busy.
- Keep what’s important in view – You can do this in words or with a picture; a picture is worth a thousand words. By putting this visual aid up on your mirror, computer, refrigerator, phone, desk or wherever, you will be triggered to remember the activity and what makes it important to you.
- Focus on the Positive – Where you focus matters. Thoughts have energy that influences your attitude and mood. Thoughts are often within your control. Yes, there times when ideas and thoughts pop into your mind, and you have choice. You can choose to be mindful and notice without judgment – neutral, or you can choose to refocus what you’re thinking about. Changing from a negative thought to a positive one will shift your energy and bring more optimism and hope. The change can be specific to the topic you are thinking about, or it can be to another topic. For example, worrying about patient care asking yourself did I do enough, did I chart it correctly, what about X. Alternatively, you could refocus to what you accomplished or a specific positive interaction that day, or decide to think about something other than work.
- Take Care of Your Body – Physical is Fundamental. Being in healthcare you are aware of this. Often though, we don’t follow our own advise, so here is a reminder Eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, for most that means 7 – 9 hours, move – be physically active. “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn
