With the emphasis on EHR and meeting documentation requirements, you may be feeling like a data entry clerk. Whether articulated or not are you wondering about your choice of career. In the recesses of your mind are you asking, “What about my job fulfillment?”
Tips to Overcome that feeling of I’m a Data Entry Clerk
- For each patient or family member look for something you can appreciate. It may be as simple as the color of a shirt or more personal. You may notice a person’s willingness to learn how to care for themselves. Noticing helps you feel more positive and when you let the person know you build connection. .
- Review your day prior to leaving work and look for 3 things that went well. Sometimes the beginning of a shift seems so long ago it is hard to remember how your day started. If you have notes or a schedule you can review this may help you look back and recall what went well. Doing this before leaving work reminds you of your impact, your relationships, and other aspects of work that are going well. Recalling these sets you up for a more positive transition to what’s next.
- Be a Treasure Hunter for opportunities to use your strengths. At the beginning of the day identify a strength or skill you want to use and watch for the opportunities to use them. People who use their strengths daily are “3x more likely to report having and excellent quality of life.” If you aren’t familiar with your strengths, you can take a free survey at Via Institute on Character. Using your strengths and skills reminds you of your capabilities and the impact you have. For more information check out Use Strengths to Overcome Burnout.
