When you’re feeling exhausted, disconnected and like you have little to offer, courage may not be what is on your mind, yet it is one way to get back to well-being. Courage allows you to hear your inner voice and then speak up, in words or actions, for what you need and what will lead to increased fulfillment in your life. Courage helps move you along your path from burnout to well-being.
Courage comes from the Latin root of “cor” which means heart. When you connect with your heart it can generate courage. Here are some strategies for you to connect with your courage.
- Values – What is important to you? When you identify these things, you can look for ways to incorporate them consciously into your life. You also can look for when these valued aspects of life are already present in your life. You’ll be on the lookout for when you manifest your values currently and you’ll have awareness to take a little more control in order to get what you want and need.
- Recall a time when you were courageous – Often we dismiss our own acts of courage and take them for granted. When it comes to being assertive for ourselves many of us shrink away. What’s an example of when you did something that took courage? If you can’t recall, here’s a hint, when was the last time you were an advocate for a patient? Did you have to question perceived authority? Often it seems easier to find courage when it comes to supporting others. This courage even on behalf of others resides in you.
- Recall a time when you were at your best – Often these are times of challenge, when we are called upon to use many internal and external resources. Write down the situation and what your actions were during that time. What made that a time when you were at your best? What qualities were present at that time? What aspects of how you were do you admire?
Making a change, at work, at home, and within ourselves requires some amount of courage, for example, speaking up, taking on more or different activities which interest you, and even trying a new exercise. When you think about the benefits of courage, what are they for you? Let us know.
