Wow, I just looked at my website and saw that I had not made a post since January. My mom, was ill with pancreatic cancer and died in February. I was the primary caretaker and managed to keep posting from the time of her diagnosis in October until January. I guess that is when things really became intense.
Since that time I have been coaching, but I did not feel up to posting blogs. My mom’s illness and death have prompted some soul searching. Many questions and not always clear answers. My mom would say the meaning of one’s life is in how one lives it. She lived her life to the fullest; she was teaching classes at a local agency when she was 91 years old and within months of her diagnosis.
One way to ensure living a life of vitality is to be involved with what is meaningful to you. Being able to care for my mom and take care of some of the practical matters related to her illness and death has been meaningful. While it has not been fun, it has allowed me to act with purpose and fulfill values which I hold dear, wanting this time to be peaceful for her and the extended family, honoring parents and acting with integrity, to name a few.
Now, I am gearing up for the new start which comes with the new academic year, as well as the New Year according to Judaism. For my Jewish readers, Shanna Tova; and for all my readers, whenever you start a new year, May it be a year of fulfillment.
Look at your days and week, what are you doing that provides you with a sense of purpose? Notice it and sense your vitality. What do you want to bring into your life tomorrow? What would make you feel more alive in the upcoming year? Go for that.
