What did I do Well?

October 14, 2015 by Dina Markind

Sam's camera from July 2012 - May 2013 032 (2)How was the 3 Ws challenge?  Did you notice any shifts in your attitude?

The variation I’m offering for a gratitude practice is, “What did I do Well?”  This question is more specific and can be empowering. Asking this on a daily basis increases your awareness of what you are doing well, not perfectly. Throughout your day you probably take it for granted that you did a good job with asking the most apropos questions for several of your patients, remembering something personal in the exchange or that you collaborated well with a co-worker etc.

With physician and nurse burnout there is a tendency to only see the negatives, what was left undone or could have been done better, as well as focusing on the onerous tasks like EHR which are associated with your work.  “What did I do well?”  does not require you to be perfect, a trap many physicians fall into.  The question focuses on the good and prevents you from dismissing and undervaluing what is satisfactory and often even better.

Are you willing to take up the challenge of journaling 3 items nightly on “What did I do well?” I hope so, and I’ll be doing it with you too. The answer can be as simple as smiling at your child or as big as a successful surgical outcome.  Click on the text bubble to share what you’ve done well.  We’ll all be cheering you on. Next week I’ll compare the experience.

To increase your hope even more, and reconnect with your well-being, contact me, an experienced healthcare coach.

Revitalize Your Life,

Dina, 203.744.YOU3 (9683)

I’ve been catching up after being away for a few days. Grateful for the time away and my ability to be present, grateful for my being curious and learning things where we went and grateful for all the photos (not just from this trip) that I’m sorting through.
My experience, I keep wanting to evaluate it, is it enough; Nice to know that what I put in, i.e. curiosity and work on photos has an impact on the joy that I have during and at the end; Yet there is a part which also feels like a lot of work. I experience Grace more when I just acknowledge what went well.
