Between the cold, the traffic and the pressures of the season my shoulders are rising to my ears and I am hunching and clenching more. I’m noticing that I am not the only one. Given how hectic this time is and the level of tension, how can we experience the comfort and joy we hope for at this time of year? Though the Christmas sales are starting earlier, the season for me begins with Thanksgiving Gratitude and closes with New Year’s Hope and Renewal. In the time between these holidays, my clients and I try to experience comfort and joy. Here are some of what has been helpful to us, and perhaps will help you to enjoy the season as well.
- Give Me Five, this is my favorite stress reducer. When feeling upset, overwhelmed, agitated or even just tired, STOP what you’re doing, and take 5 deep breaths, allow yourself to really fill your lungs with air and exhale slowly. You’ll probably feel more comfortable after a few breathes.
- Remember the meaning of the holidays and be grateful. Take a moment to remember with gratitude; be specific in noticing what you appreciate.
- Get some exercise, drink water and get enough sleep.
- Allow enough time for travel, cooking, gift wrapping, etc
- Let go of expectations and assumptions – Be Present with love, compassion and gratitude; this is the best present.
