“Appreciate the Good and the Good Appreciates.” Sincere appreciation is a powerful and wonderful gift for both the giver and the receiver. Tal Ben Shahar, author of many books on how to integrate positive psychology into your life and co-founder of the Wholebeing Institute taught me the phrase above. Appreciation has two meanings, to be grateful and to increase in value, as in “the stocks appreciated.”
The end of the year is often a time of reflection. When you review, be sure to include what you appreciate. What’s the Best Thing for you about Working in Healthcare?
Below are some of the responses I’ve gotten from people I’ve been asking.
- I know I’m doing important work.
- I like being involved in a field that is interesting, the brain is fascinating… intellectually stimulating.
- I have an opportunity to meet a wide variety of people and learn new and different things.
- I enjoy the satisfying relationships I have with my patients; especially those I’ve known over the years.
- I work with good people and we have some self-determination as a small group (9 physicians)
Though physician burnout is getting worse, there is still much to appreciate. With your end of year review and reflection, don’t forget to look at what you appreciate. Regularly living with and actively expressing gratitude can go a long way to going beyond burnout.
