The 40% of Happiness Within Your Control

June 5, 2014 by Dina Markind

nurturing social connectionsWant more energy, positive feelings and success? Tap into the 40% of happiness within your control. With more happiness, the burn out you are experiencing will transform and you will be on your journey to well-being. You can influence your happiness levels to be higher through your intentional daily activities and how you think. .

One of the benefits of participating in the Certificate in Positive Psychology class is that I am taking the time to read exciting research related to well-being, happiness and positivity. My interest has been peaked, and I’m developing new ideas to serve you. My most recent find is The How of Happiness, by Sonja Lyubomirsky.  The research which she has done and reviewed identifies that each of us has about 40% impact on our happiness level.  While we each have a set point for happiness which does not change, we also have the ability to raise above that set point.

What do I mean by happiness? In this context, I’m defining it as both current pleasure and meaning related to a sense of fulfillment which may have a future element.

Research shows that while there is no one single path to happiness, there are 12 strategies which have been shown to increase levels of happiness.  The key is to find the one, two or three activities that fit for you.  Lyubomirsky has adapted a Person Activity Fit Diagnostic which I can share with you. Contact me so that you can identify where your efforts will provide the best ROI for your happiness.

What are these 12 broad categories of activities that have demonstrated increases in happiness?

  1. Expressing Gratitude
  2. Cultivating Optimism
  3. Avoiding Overthinking and Social Comparison
  4. Practicing Acts of Kindness
  5. Nurturing Social Relationships
  6. Developing Strategies for Coping
  7. Learning to Forgive
  8. Increasing Flow Experiences
  9. Savoring Life’s Joys
  10. Committing to Your Goals
  11. Practicing Religion and Spirituality
  12. Taking care of your Body

Over the next several months, my intention is to share ways for you to engage in these 12 activities so that you can bring more happiness into your life. You’ll have an opportunity to experiment and see which ones yield the most happiness for you.  On your journey, you’ll develop a more positive outlook and the benefits that come along with it.
