Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. We take the time to appreciate the abundance in our lives and enjoy the harvest of the season. The warmth of being together in celebration is rare for many of us, and especially appreciated.
Gratitude is my go to strategy to boost my mood. When we are feeling thankful it is hard to also be feeling angry, nasty and negative. Even when disappointed or hurt, gratitude helps to blunt the pain and distress in a situation. When my mom was dying it was painful for me, and yet I was also grateful for the time that I had with her and how she was living even until her last days. I was able to recognize the support of family and friends. All this helped diminish the pain so that the predominant feeling was gratitude even within natural sadness.
Appreciating our blessings is a powerful way to increase our well being. Thanksgiving need not be just for families on a Thursday in November. Take the time this week, and for the next few, to notice what you are grateful for. Bring this to your chiropractic or nursing work and see what shifts. You might even experiment with articulating out loud what you appreciate.
“To be grateful is to find blessings in all that surrounds you. A truly thankful heart will bring light into your life and peace to your soul.” This quotation by an unknown author, is a good summary of the effect gratitude has on us.
I am grateful to all of you for your interest, energy and engagement.
