Strengths to Tap into Well-Being

August 23, 2017 by Dina Markind

Many of us have a vague sense of our strengths, what we do well, without having a vocabulary to really capture these attributes.  For me, it took years before I could articulate what it is that I do best. Once I was able to hone in on this and identify it with words, I had both more appreciation for myself and more direction in terms of what I want to do. I was able to use my strengths to tap into well-being.  You can do this too.

There is a tendency for people to be dismissive about what they do well, thinking “it is not unusual, lots of people can …” or “isn’t so valuable.” Do you fall into this category? I did.  It turns out that research reveals that people who use their strengths every day are

  • 3x more likely to report having an excellent quality of life
  • 6x more likely to be engaged at work*

You’re invited to visit the VIA Institute on Character and take the survey.  This is a simple validated self-assessment that takes less than 15 minutes. It focuses on some of your best qualities. The results you’ll get back can help you understand some of your core character strengths. For those who are interested, you can go deeper and learn more by exploring within the website or contacting me for a debrief and idea generation of how you can use your strengths more.

Upon receiving the results of the survey, it is not uncommon to think “really is that me” or “I wish this other strength were in the top 5.” The assessment is on the one hand a moment in time and on the other, a reflection of enduring core aspects of you. All the results are reflections of strengths, it’s just that some are not used as often as others.

One of the exciting aspects of the VIA strengths work is that you can cultivate various strengths so that they become more a part of your life and perhaps they may even change position over time. As with cultivating plants, you have to provide the fertile environment for the strength to grow.Strengths to tap into Well-Being
