Spiritual Renewal

April 9, 2015 by Dina Markind

flowers from Botanical Gardens 005While the natural world is renewing itself physically, the holidays at this time of year are reminding us to involve ourselves in spiritual renewal. In this article, the concept of “spiritual” goes beyond its relationship to religion and includes the idea of connection to deeply held values and to a purpose beyond your self-interest. This type of spiritual energy provides you with direction, is a powerful source of motivation, and aids you in perseverance. These concepts are more deeply explored in The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz.

They note that spiritual energy is sustained by balancing a commitment to others with adequate self-care. As physicians and nurses you’ve been trained to meet others’ needs first. Through your training and the busy workload, there are many times when you’ve had to put yourself on hold. Repeatedly pushing your needs down can lead to burnout. With added pressures at home the question may arise, “when do I have time for self-care, let alone a sense of purpose?” Reconnecting with your values is a way for you to get inspired and go beyond the basics, to what fuels you as an individual. That is part of what makes your Best Self List (March 18 and April 1 posts) so important.

Regularly reflecting on your values and holding yourself accountable to them takes effort, and can be inspiring. Check in with your Best Self List; set an intention early in the day and inspire yourself. Throughout your day watch for opportunities when you can use these strengths or qualities. Deciding to become a nurse or physician reflects a noble sense of purpose. Utilize your Best Self List to reconnect with that desire to be of service in the unique ways that you bring.

On a lighter note, take advantage of the longer daylight and spend time in nature -walking outdoors, being in a garden, or just sitting outside. Simple pleasures like listening to good music and being with people you love, all can renew your spirit. Through appreciating beauty and savoring the joyful moments in your life, you increase your positivity and well-being.

What’s on your Best Self List? What are you doing that reflects your values? Leave comments, or contact me to share in a more personal way.
