Roar with Courage

August 9, 2012 by Dina Markind

August is associated with the astrological sign of Leo the lion.  I figured this is a good month to focus on courage.  In the Wizard of Oz, the lion is portrayed as cowardly and this is seen as unnatural, but it turns out that he has courage which he hasn’t yet recognized.  This is true for all of us. We each have courage within which shows up at various times.  When does your courage show itself?

Last week, I was at a fascinating conference on Creativity and Madness. I’ll use one of the presenters for an example of ways to get in touch with courage; my husband, he presented to the crowd of over 300 people.  He spoke, sang and played the piano, Wow – he is an amateur and never before spoke to such a large group, let alone played the piano for so many people.  So what prompted him and what helped him to overcome his saboteurs, critical self-sabotaging voices promoting doubt?
  • Interest in the material, he loves (values) George Gershwin music and learning about the brain; he’s a neurologist
  • A desire to share his knowledge; he thought what he had learned was valuable for the participants at the conference
  • Pleasure he has sharing the music and information
  • A challenge which he set for himself to learn about biological basis of creativity and to present to a large group (valued the experience) and then
  • breaking down the presentation into component parts and working on them individually and then pulling them together
  • working with others who are more experienced to make this daunting task a success
  • lots of practice and revision of the presentation

The excitement about the prospect of learning and sharing proceeded the action steps.  He was able to get in touch with this excitement by connecting with his values – learning more about creativity and the brain, music of George Gershwin and even the idea of overcoming the challenge of speaking to such a large group as a way to expand his confidence and competence.

Getting in touch with your values can help expand your courage.  Valuing another person or a cause pushes people to go beyond their comfort level for the benefit of that cause. What about doing this for yourself? Are there things/areas in your life that you are in need of courage?  What is important about this area to you? What values does this activity connect with?  When you connect with the underlying value and importance of the activity notice your energy; stay connected and see what you can do.
