May You Be Happy, May You Be Healthy, May Your New Year be one of Fulfillment.
The lotus flower makes its way through murky, muddy water, persevering in dark and suffocating conditions, making its way past obstacles toward the light, then blossoming beautifully at the top. Not only is it unfazed by the mud in its path, the lotus is nourished by it!
Much like the lotus, we trek through life’s challenges and darkness, learning and growing with each experience, shaped and nourished by everything, even by what we initially felt was “in our way.”
The experience of burnout is often one of suffocating darkness. For healthcare professionals it shows up as lack of enthusiasm, emotional and physical fatigue, depersonalization – especially regarding patients, and a lack of self-value – feeling like what you do doesn’t matter. All of your experiences including every difficulty and heartache, disappointment and hardship, are essential to who you are becoming. While things don’t necessarily happen for the best, there are some people who are able to make the best of what happens. Be one of these people.
Keep pushing toward the light, open yourself to be grateful for the lessons along the way, not resentful of them, for without the mud there could be no lotus. Without your challenges your beauty and humanity would be diminished.*
However difficult it is, experiencing turmoil and sadness is a crucial part of life. Allowing yourself to experience your emotions provides you with information. Increasing your comfort with emotions that you once tried to avoid leads to heightened confidence and balance. By expanding your emotional range, you expand your ability to feel alive.
