More on Gratitude

February 6, 2014 by Dina Markind

There are things we know but don’t articulate well.  Tal Ben-Shahar has written clearly about the power of gratitude especially when it is articulated and expressed. Here is what he wrote in Being Happy, “The word appreciate has two meanings.  The first meaning is “to be thankful,” the opposite of taking something for granted. The second meaning is “to increase in value” (as money appreciates in the bank).  Combined, these two meanings point to a truth that has been proved repeatedly in research on gratitude: when we appreciate the good in our lives, the good grows and we have more if it.”

While in the past gratitude may have seemed like a nicety, it is worth it for you as well as your patients to adopt a gratitude practice.   As a physician, chiropractor, or other health care provider you have to listen to a lot of complaints, and that can wear you down or lead to burn out.  Asking your patients, “what went well?” or “What are you grateful for since your last visit?” may shift the energy a little so that the benefits of the visit increase.

As for you, adopting a gratitude practice has a sustaining and nourishing quality.  Highlighting what you appreciate helps to put a positive perspective on your life, one aspect of flourishing. Taking a minute or two on a daily basis to express gratitude, out loud or in writing is powerful.  Just this simple exercise is revitalizing and increases well-being.*

Start today, express your gratitude either write it down for yourself or tell someone what you appreciate right now in your life and be curious about what your patient’s appreciate.  See what shifts for you.
