“We need to do more,” uh oh I’m/we’re not enough that must mean we’re failing. Has this thought ever crossed your mind? I used to think ‘not enough’ was a way of saying “I’m not legitimate,” if not an outright failure, I sometimes felt close to it. What a limiting belief! This narrowed my possibilities. Well guess what, those ideas are not true.
You can be both enough and need to do more. With a Growth mindset it is easier to embrace this idea. Learning is always possible. Development through life is the norm. We are both enough as is, and need to change; life is dynamic.
Here’s another one I heard recently, “It has to be hard otherwise I’m not learning and growing and if I’m not growing then I must be atrophying” Wow, how often have you fallen into the trap of “No pain no gain?” I certainly used to believe in the value of “if it’s hard, then it’s more worthwhile.” Really is this the only way to grow? Could this be another limiting belief? I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen people grow and change as a result of good teachers, loving care, sound advice, reading, listening, watching and more. It doesn’t always have to be a struggle.
What’s a limiting belief that’s impacting you at work and elsewhere in your life?
Pay attention to when some of these thoughts come to your mind. You can examine them and ask, “Is this really true?” Embrace a Growth Mindset and see what you can learn. You may even modify your beliefs.
