With taxes due soon, many of us are rushing to put money into our IRAs, and this reminds us of our own retirement. What is the money for? What are your plans? What are your desires for that time of life? For me, the savings offer security as well as the potential to not just add years to my life, but also to add life to my years.
While putting money into your IRA can happen once a year, preparing for your future of well-being requires ongoing involvement. One of the basic ways you set yourself up for the future is through what you take in; the first thing that usually comes to mind is the food you eat. What is the role of food in your life? Do you live to eat? eat to live? use food for comfort? for socialization? USDA, choose my plate, is a great initial resource for meal planning and nutritional health. Eating a minimum of 5 fruits and vegetables a day provides the source of many antioxidants and the fiber we need for health. What can you do to be sure you get enough of these? By the way, moving toward a more plant based diet, rather than relying on meat and animal products is showing promise for reducing cardiac risk factors.
In addition, to the food we take in, there is the air we breathe and what comes in through our senses – the music we listen to, the conversations (are they filled with gossip?) and the information we take in from various media –magazines, TV, books and the internet. The list could go on. It is worth noticing the effect of what you take in beyond food. Perhaps you’ll find that some things nourish you while others deplete you. Once you notice, you can evaluate how much of each you want to have in your life.
While the money in your IRA provides anticipated financial security, investing in yourself with what you take in now, impacts you now and into the future. What is one change you can make today to ensure your future of well-being? Share what it is and we’ll support you in making this change.
