Recently, I assisted in a mastermind group in which we all came as we imagine we will be in 5 years. There was so much energy in the room and a sense of success around what each of us achieved. Some of what we noticed about each other in the future is:We each tapped into optimism to imagine a positive future. By doing this, we manifested well-being and success for ourselves. Optimism is a key element in cultivating positivity. And when we experience positivity we become more creative, better problem solvers and more resilient.
Each participant was also asked what advice she has for her younger current self. Several themes emerged with each person mentioning something like,
- Stop worrying so much
- Stretch even though it is uncomfortable
- Relax and enjoy the ride
- Trust, pay attention and trust your gut
- Keep going, work toward your goals
- Seize the moment
- Think Big, Play Big
With these kinds of sentiments, I left with a great deal of excitement and sense of potential for each of us. Embracing these ideas helps each of us cultivate optimism.
The funny thing is that when it came to preparing for the Come as You’ll Be in 5 Years event, a number of us were anxious about it. In preparing, we had to make choices of what we would want to achieve. Many of us don’t think that far ahead usually. In a debrief, “What if …” came up for many of us; specifically “What if we don’t achieve this? … Am I thinking of too much success, too little?” Someone noted, “it’s not enough to have current shame, but also we projected shame.” Funny though, when we were in front of each other, we were able to speak with the voice of our future self and the shame fell away. We took pride in our imagined accomplishments and we were proud of one another.
Take a moment and imagine your positive future. This is not a commitment, it is an opportunity. Try it on occasionally, dress as you would like to be and hold yourself in the posture of how you want to be. Spend a little time being present with your future self.
Ask yourself, “What is one thing that I can do to get me closer to that vision?” Let us know what comes to mind.
For me, partnering with others will get me closer to where I want to be. The working and building programs with another makes it more fun for me. Plus, it helps me stay accountable for moving forward on projects, whether work related, home life or vacations. What will you do to get closer to how and who you want to be in 5 years?
