Thanksgiving is a good reminder for us to experience and express gratitude. For most of us, when we have gratitude and appreciation we experience a sense of optimism within. Optimism and its ‘sister’ enhance our sense of vitality.
There are also times when gratitude makes us aware of a lack or deficiency; and the opposite is true that the awareness of lack, highlights an alternative positive appreciation. Superstorm Sandy made many in the Northeast aware of our vulnerability, scary, but also highlighted for many how grateful we are for our creature comforts – heat and light, running water, and the community support we felt from friends and family who took each other in and continue to share resources.
Here are some things you can do to experience, express and enhance your sense of gratitude and vitality:
- Notice right now, in this moment, what you are grateful for
- In stressful or disappointing moments, stop and pay attention to what you appreciate even in this less than ideal situation.
- Express this gratitude, perhaps a verbal acknowledgement, a thank you note, a donation in honor of the person, event or experience or just by passing on a kindness. You can find a way which works for you.
- At Thanksgiving go around the table and state something specific for which you are grateful.
Thanksgiving isn’t just for once a year. What are you grateful for today? Let us know.
