Were you able to experience and express gratitude more regularly in the last week? Through the regular practice of expressing gratitude your focus shifts toward what you appreciate and positive aspects of your life. Gratitude and negativity do not travel together. When you pay attention to the positive in your life, your happiness increases.
The 3 Ws, “What Went Well?” is a powerful practice. Ask yourself this everyday. Then, you can journal or express what you notice out loud. For people who are burnt out and have trouble seeing the positive, this is can be a challenging question. My clients tell me it is one of the most powerful exercises they do to shift their focus. The answer can be as simple as appreciating a smile to something much bigger like my sister gave birth to a healthy baby. Training yourself to look for the positive on a daily basis heightens your awareness so that you don’t overlook the presence of things you appreciate in your life.
The pressures of switching to ICD 10, increase patient visits and documentation requirements may be causing you to have a narrow and negative focus. With all that’s going on regarding your work as a physician or nurse the feeling of lack of impact and even that patient care is interfering with your work getting done may reflect burnout.
Are you willing to take up a challenge of practicing the 3 Ws this week? It’s fun, it’s an opportunity to re-experience the positive from your day and over time you may even see it as a treasure hunt for the good during your day. Next week I’ll have a variation for you to try.
