Tax season arouses our awareness of not only what we earned and owe for the last year, but also our worth in general. With the continual decrease in Medicare reimbursements, you may be feeling a bit demoralized. Upward pressure to produce RVUs and downward reimbursements feel like a mismatch as it relates to your value. Low self-value is one of the signs of physician and nurse burnout.
Awareness of your finances is an opportunity to take stock and look at your goals from a financial point of view. While this is important, it is not the only way to look at your worth.
My mom used to say, “Don’t confuse your self-worth with your Net Worth.” For her, self-confidence and self-esteem came after self-worth which was a baseline. This pre-requisite for well-being requires that you have an inherent sense of your own worth. This worthiness keeps informing you that you are valuable and worth investing time, money and efforts for.
So, how do you know that you’re valuable? Sometimes it comes from feedback from others. And, more importantly it comes from within yourself. Perhaps you believe you are worthy of fulfillment by virtue of being alive. What’s more powerful for most people is when self-worth comes through appreciating who you are; this is independent of your tangible accomplishments and monetary worth. A powerful way to appreciate yourself is through recognizing your values and acting on them.
What’s important to you?* How are you engaging with this value? Perhaps it’s family, how often are you spending time together? What are you doing with each other? Music – what are you doing either creating or listening to music? What you appreciate on a day to day basis also give a clue to what you value. How does this show up in your life? We can all learn from each other. Let us know what’s important to you and what you’re doing about it. Leave comments, or contact me to share in a more personal way.
