Do you ever need an Attitude Adjustment re Patient Care?

March 19, 2014 by Dina Markind

PerspectivePerspective/Cognitive Restructuring/Reframing are related tools we can all use to see things in a new light. What do I mean by these phrases? How we look at various situations, people and experiences.  My computer dictionary defined perspective as “(noun) a way of regarding situations or topics etc. ‘consider what follows from the positivist view’” So, experiment consider what comes from a positivist view.

One way to look (perspective) at the value of reframing is to acknowledge that our thoughts impact our experience.  What we focus on, determines what we look for and what we see and experience.  The subjective thoughts which occur before, after and during our encounters play a large role in determining what it is we experience and take away.

If you are having a disturbing feeling, notice and take a look at what it is bringing up for you; what’s on your mind? Then choose a thought which may be more helpful so that you can act in a way that is most appropriate and optimal in the current situation. There are times when all you can do is change your thought and no change in action needs to or can be taken.

Examples: If you’re getting annoyed with EHR and all the documenting you have to do, you may want to switch from data entry focus, to how easy it will be to follow up and retrieve information in the future.  Anxious with a patient, you can quickly take note of it, and check what the story you’re telling yourself is. “She’ll be such a kvetch overtime… he’s just looking for an insurance payment… Uh Oh, I think something is really not right.” If the thought going along with the feeling serves you and the patient, stick with it and let it guide you.  If however it is interfering, shift your focus to something more positive, a strength you’ve noticed about the patient, repeat a calming phrase or word you can say silently to yourself, or even let your gaze fall on a pleasant picture for a moment. When you refocus on your patient bring the calmer you into the conversation.
