Recently, I read the following on the Go Red For Women Better U, “When making changes to your lifestyle, it is important to control your thoughts. Stay positive and identify unhelpful ways of thinking.”
This got me thinking more about overcoming obstacles, this time the obstacles of our thoughts and self-talk. Sometimes when trying to implement the changes for a healthy heart it can seem like we’ll never get it right. In coaching, we refer to the internal voices which hold us back as saboteurs. Saboteurs set themselves up to protect us, but end up just limiting us, and the way they do it is often with a critical and nasty tone.
So what are some ways you can deal with these thoughts so that you can “stay positive?”
- “Identify unhelpful ways of thinking” – this is the first step to being able to deal with the thoughts, recognize that they are not helpful
- Choose to Ignore the negative thought – go ahead pursuing what you know is in your best interest as if you have blinders on or ear plugs, and just do what is right for you without taking heed of these unhelpful thoughts
- Acknowledge the thought and recognize it for what it is only a thought and you have better thoughts which you can trust more to be in your interest
- Keep the Big Picture in mind – think of the overall goal of the changes and the values that you will be fulfilling by attaining your healthy heart lifestyle
Please share how you’re able to stay positive.
