“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” On the contrary it grows. Buddha
As physicians and nurses you are in a unique position to influence others. If you’re experiencing burnout you may be feeling like you don’t have much to offer. The studies refer to this as “low self-value.” However, you have the ability to inspire others by your example as well as treatment plans and your words. Because of the contact you have with so many individuals from a variety of backgrounds, your impact can spread to many.
Physical is fundamental, it is the reason patients initially come to see you. The direct care you provide for physical health is paramount for third party payers, and your influence goes beyond the results of procedures and prescriptions. Your way of being with others is influential in itself, by showing honest compassion, by asking “what’s gone well since you were last in?” by acknowledging when a situation is challenging or identifying something you appreciate about your patient and sharing that, you can make a patient’s day. Providing care with compassion for the individual patient enhances your well-being too.
By modeling and sharing some of the positivity strategies you’ve had an opportunity to learn* you can boost your patients’ well-being. Then, there will be a ripple effect to those in contact with them. If there is a quick strategy that works for you i.e. reframing to encompass the bigger purpose, taking several breathes to center or creating transition rituals etc. share these when appropriate.
