Many of us have a hard time balancing taking care of ourselves with taking care of our family responsibilities. For people with young children and those caring for an elderly parent this can be particularly challenging, This topic is especially poignant to me now since my mom is ill and I want to be active in caring for her as well as care for my family, coaching practice and home. It’s easy to lose track of our individual needs when we are so busy caring for others whom we love. However, it is essential for our well-being that we take care of ourselves, filling our own ‘energy wells’ so that we have vitality and something to offer when we are with those we love.
At home, there is always one more thing you can do, another dish in the sink, a counter that needs wiping, or a person who needs a ride somewhere. If you don’t set some boundaries, you will find yourself on an endless journey of housework and doing for others. You may end up feeling drained and out of touch with your inner life force. One way to prevent this is by integrating self-care into your schedule. When you feel like you’re on a treadmill that doesn’t stop, it can be extremely helpful to take time, even five minutes, to quietly be by and with yourself to focus for a few moments to relax and notice what you need. Even in times when others need a lot it, you still have needs which when filled allow you to be of more service to those you love. Many people find it helpful to consciously focus on breathing which allows for relaxation and revitalizing.
In addition to taking a few minutes a day for focusing yourself, it is worthwhile for you to ask yourself what replenishes you. Once you figure that out, see how you can incorporate what fills your “energy well.” Many people feel more energized after speaking with someone they enjoy, or getting a massage or watching a funny video, even a short one on YouTube; perhaps you will too. When thinking about taking care of your family, know that you’re a part of your family too.
