This is a great time of year to feel alive, the weather is more comfortable than summer or winter and the sunlight on clear days is so crisp. It is the time of in-gathering the harvest. The abundance of fresh vegetables, crisp apples and even the corn which is quickly coming to the end of its season is all so beautiful and mouthwatering.
It turns out that gratitude practices are powerful tools for revitalizing and increasing one’s happiness. The thing is that knowing there is so much to be grateful for and feeling this sense of gratitude can be two different experiences. The cerebral thinking about it may inform your ability to experience the many wonderful aspects of this season and of your life, while allowing yourself to notice and experience the positive around opens you up to the excitement and joy of it.
Here are a few ideas for how you can sense more gratitude in your life:
- Set a time each day when you will out loud or in writing note 3 positive experiences for which you are grateful. They can be as small as the fresh smell after you’ve done laundry or as big as the love you share with another, and anything in between.
- Stop twice during your day, look around and notice where you are at that moment and something which you appreciate right then. If it is difficult at first, think of small things like a color which is present, the light, or music which may be in the background. The more you do this the more sensitive your eyes and ears will become to appreciating your current situations.

By the way, don’t forget to appreciate things about yourself on occasion.
