I just read the morning musing “Creating a Spa Atmosphere in Your Home” from FlyLady.net. Her response to what does it mean to take care of ourselves was “It all boils down to a lifestyle change for many of us.”
Heart Health and well-being often does come down to lifestyle. What we choose to take in and how we use our energy are 2 ways to look at many aspects of our lifestyles. What we take in is not just the food we eat, it is also the air we breathe, the shows we listen to, read and watch, as well as the conversations. We use our energy in our work and daily movement as well as an exercise routine. Often we do both taking in and expending energy, as in our conversations, our hobbies which can renew us as we put out effort in creating scrapbooks, sweaters, wood crafts etc. and our volunteer work which may renew us as we participate in making things better for ourselves and others. Our relationships are another place where we both take in and expend energy; what is the balance in your relationships and activities?
Back to the more practical matters. The article from FlyLady was a reminder that we are in charge of our bodies and minds. .
Here are some thoughts which came to mind or were reinforced by the article:
- Lifestyles are made up of small behaviors and we can make small changes which will lead to bigger changes for our benefit. Become aware of what you are doing and see what small change you can make.
- Accountability – when we make commitments with another it often focuses us into action. Accountability can be with a friend, a group, a professional and self. One way coaching distinguishes itself as a profession is by its emphasis on accountability. In the end, the accountability is to self. You are worth making changes for. The energy and health you will have as a result will allow you to share your unique qualities. The friend, the group and the coach all know that you have something special and are rooting for you. What can you do to remind yourself you are worth the effort of change? Who can you call to cheer you on and be accountable to?
- Lifestyle changes are not all about denial and work. It is important to support and reward yourself along the way. Wholesome snacks, fresh fruit, drinking enough water, finding a work out buddy are ways you can support yourself. As for rewarding your efforts perhaps fresh flowers, a manicure or a visit with a friend appeal to you. It is so easy to say to ourselves “the change is a reward in and of itself, knowing I am doing something good for myself,” but having something extra that we can look at or hold reminds us of our success and helps us feel good about the changes we’re making. For many, it is motivating to get a prize/reward. What will you do to reward yourself for making and sustaining a change?
