Recently, I read an article about Randy Jackson of American Idol living with Diabetes. I was encouraged by what he said. Though he was speaking of diabetes, lots of what he spoke about is applicable for dealing with cardiac disease too. Here are some highlights.
1) “It’s about us in this life taking ownership of our own lives.” Personal responsibility brings with it personal power; to me this is inspiring. When we take action to improve our heart health we become empowered.
2) “The first step toward health, Jackson says, is putting yourself first and understanding what works for you.” Ah, this second part is a key. There are many suggestions as to what you can and should do, and in the end you have to find what works for you. When is your best time to be active? What is the best choice of activity for you? What can you do to modify foods you enjoy so they will be more healthful or you can have more of the healthy choices?
3) “Jackson also stresses the importance of working with an emotional health expert to prepare you for real change. …’You have to take stock of who you are. Put the spotlight on you.’” Here’s where coaching comes in. Change and transitions are challenging in and of themselves, and when they are associated with a risk to yourself, adjusting can become even more challenging. You don’t have to go it alone.

Dina, thank you for highlighting the second remark, “The first step toward health, Jackson says, is putting yourself first and understanding what works for you.” Ah, this second part is a key. There are many suggestions as to what you can and should do, and in the end you have to find what works for you.”
It is both exciting and frustrating, exciting because it gives you access to being the authority in your life, and frustrating because when it comes to health, one size fits one size.

Good point, one size fits one size is so often the case. Go out and discover what works for you.
