One image of burnout is a bank account that is overdrawn. You make deposits into your energy bank account with eating well, exercise, loving relationships, connecting to purpose and more. Withdrawals are made as you expend energy, caring for others, documentation, rushing to complete tasks, worrying, and other energy burners. Sometimes your energy account runs low. On occasion, you’re overdrawn when your life is very full with good and/or stressful situations. This leads to your account going beyond depleted. For leading an optimal life it is best to limit the frequency of depletion. How often do you take out an overdraft? Whenever you do, it’s time to replenish. Don’t wait until you’re in energy debt and scrambling for ways to feel better.
- Take a break – Take your mind off of what is depleting you and refocus. Take in something that will nourish you on a personal level. Read a book, go for a walk with a friend, listen to music, enjoy a good meal prepared by someone else. Allow yourself several full nights of sleep to restore physically too.
- Connect with what’s important – Focus on the value and purpose of what you are doing.
- Spend time with a loved one – Relationships are the most important aspect of your life for happiness. Enjoy the company of a loved one where you can experience their love for you too.
- Gratitude – 3Ws – What Went Well today? Identify 3 things that went well for you in the last 24 hours and write them down at least several times a week. This helps to shift to a positive focus. Writing it down reinforces the experience and provides you with a way to look back and recall what’s working.
