Being a physician or nurse is often physically and mentally challenging. To stay fit you need to grow your resilience and go beyond physical fitness.
Focusing on your own well-being in an intentional way is essential for building resilience. When you demonstrate alignment with the healthy behaviors you encourage your patients too. Without refueling with intentional self-care and self-compassion you’re likely to make errors, end up ill and burnt out – exhausted, numb to yourself and others’ concerns and feeling low self-worth.
Resilience can be cultivated. Here are some ideas for you to grow your resilience:
- Establish and maintain healthy relationships
- Practice self-compassion, including occasionally or even frequently silencing the inner critic
- Eat nourishing food and limit unhealthy food
- Get adequate sleep
- Allow yourself to process emotions from difficult situations
- Build healthy financial habits and practices
- Practice personal spirituality
- Continue to learn
- Experience relaxation time
What replenishes you and gives you the energy you need?
Stress and burnout in healthcare is not the individual practitioners’ responsibility alone. There are changes that are needed in the workplace too. In the meantime, you can make an impact on you. So ask yourself,
- What do I need to be doing more of to feel more alive?
- What could I be doing less of?
- What 3 things or resources can help me be more resilient in the next few weeks? Perhaps one resource will be hiring a coach.
Let us know what you decide and the results of the changes you implement.
