It may seem odd to think about your legacy when you’re feeling burnt out, and yet this is a question that people often ask in one form or another during coaching. What is the impact I am making? What will I be remembered for? What do I want to be remembered for? What will be my legacy?
These types of questions connect you to your sense of purpose, the big question of “what am I here for?” Healthcare is seen as a meaningful profession and along the way you may lose sight of this meaning. With so many variables beyond your control the impact you have on the patient and family lives may be more limited than you imagined when you started out. With a realistic sense of optimism, what would you like your impact to be?
It took me years to figure out what legacy I want to leave behind beyond my family and children as the most important way to impact the future. As a result of my own experience of burnout and the opportunities I’ve had as a coach and certified in positive psychology I identified that I want to prevent burnout for others. I have a special affinity for those in healthcare because of my own background and the important work that nurses, physicians, NPs, PAs and others in healthcare do. You each have so much potential to have an impact on others and the future of health in our society.
I feel like my creating a legacy has reached a new milestone, I just got the registered trademark for my signature program, Vital Signs of Well-Being®. Yahoo! This program draws on my experience and knowledge to help you prevent or recover from burnout. It is fundamental to my philosophy as a coach and the public speaking and organization work that I do. Check out Vital Signs of Well-Being®. Contact me to see how it can benefit you or your organization.
If you were going to share your story, what will your legacy be?
