One of the things I most enjoyed about my work as a camp nurse was being part of a team. While you may be alone with your patients, most health care professionals work as part of a team. Are you a valued member of your team, or do you feel like a widget?
Being acknowledged for your unique contributions to the care of your patient let’s you know you’re appreciated. On the other hand, there may be times when you feel like an interchangeable part. With the increase in “shift work” for physicians, this has existed a long time for nurses, you may be feeling more like a replacement between one doc leaving and the next arriving. This feeling contributes to the depersonalization you may have toward patients as well as your wondering about what your value is. Both of these are signs of and causes of physician burnout.
What are somethings you can do to overcome the sense that you are just an interchangeable part?
- Identify your areas of strength – perhaps you’re especially good at diagnosis, patient teaching or communication with patient, family and staff.
- For a broader look at your strengths, take the VIA survey to more clearly identify your character strengths. This is a well validated free online self-assessment. Studies have shown that people who use their strengths regularly (daily) are happier. So once you know your strengths, be sure to use them; bring them home with you too.
- Notice what you and others do differently and how each of you brings something uniquely positive to the care of your patient. You can integrate your knowledge of strengths by looking for them in others.
- Even if you’re not the leader of your team, let others know what you see as their unique contributions and the special qualities that they bring to your team. You’ll be building a more positive environment for all.
