Are you so busy with taking care of patients, documentation and your family that you rarely have time to think about your needs? It’s hard to believe but true, many physicians and nurses who know the importance of eating right, getting enough sleep and movement, and cultivating good relationships often don’t follow their own recommendations; at times, you may be too burnt-out. This blog post is a reminder to “take your own advice”
This week my oldest child turns 24. I remember when I brought him home, I had this realization about how narrow the needs really were, provide good nutrition, sleep along with opportunities to move, keep him warm and provide love. These essentials for infant well-being are still primary needs in our adult lives.
Good nutrition – The Mediterranean Diet seems to be the one which is best for most people. Here’s a quick summary – eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. Using healthy fats, such as olive oil, and herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods. Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month. Not only has it been associated with cardiovascular health, but also with decreasing brain shrinkage.
Sleep and movement – More and more studies are coming out with information regarding the importance of adequate sleep. For most that means 7 – 9 hours a night. Adequate sleep is associated with better weight control, decrease risk of Alzheimer’* and improved mood to name a few benefits. The Chopra Center recently published an article related to banishing stress; sure enough adequate sleep is among the top 3 ways to decrease stress.
Loving relationships – The quality of your relationships is the biggest indicator of your well-being. It is a strong predictor of happiness and impacts your physical health as well. Being Kind is a good base. Four aspects of relationships have been identified^ and highlighted as ways to increase the positivity in your interactions. The degree may vary, though these are useful whether in relationships in your community, at work or with friends and family. These are:
- Time together withThoughtful Effort
- Be Authentic – Know and Be Known
- Allow for and manage conflict
- Appreciate the Positive and the Positive Appreciates.
