There are many times when healthcare professionals feel insufficient. We see the needs, can diagnose problems and occasionally provide a cure. We also see beyond the diagnosis and notice factors which impact illness. All too often, there is a sense of inadequacy in the face of illnesses which are debilitating, especially for those which have no cure. This feeling can lead to undervaluing what each of us has to offer.
This undervaluing is one of the hallmarks of physician burnout. Some professionals joke about being documenters rather than health care providers.
Here are some strategies to help you recognize how valuable you are.
- Start the day by anticipating what you can look forward to this day. While looking forward to the positive moderates negativity, it doesn’t necessarily make you happier.
- So bump this up by going on a treasure hunt for the positive impact that you have throughout your day. Pay attention to when a patient or colleague expresses thanks to you. Notice when you make an insightful diagnosis. Witness your efforts and the effects of bringing more comfort to a patient.
- Develop areas outside of work where you can experience the positive impact your efforts make. This may be through your engagement in the arts, volunteer work, or even within your family. One of the keys is to notice and take in what your impact is.
- Act in accordance with your Best Self, see blog of March 18 and April 1. You’ll appreciate the positive impact your behavior has on you as well as those around you.
